Flu season appears out of nowhere each year. Being prepared for flu season is always a good idea, especially for people at a higher risk for more serious infections, such as seniors and those with underlying health issues. At FootPrints Home Care, we take the health of our home care clients seriously. Here are a few guidelines we suggest to stay happy and healthy this flu season.

Healthcare experts believe there will be a rise in the number of cases of influenza this year. There are three flu vaccines available for people aged 65 and older. The US Center for Disease Control says you can get a flu vaccine at the same time as a Covid-19 vaccine if you’re eligible and the timing coincides. It’s important to ensure you are prepared and are taking the necessary precautions to stay safe and healthy as flu season begins.

  1. Clean, clean, clean: Make sure to wash your hands often and disinfect surfaces with high contact areas. Our caregivers will help with this in each senior client’s home.
  2. Get your flu shot soon: It’s recommended adults get a flu shot by October so that immunity has time to develop. In recent years, the flu season shows up sooner and lasts longer.
  3. Protect yourself and others: Wearing a mask in public will help prevent contracting the flu and reduce the spread of infection.
  4. Prepare your medicine cabinet: Health professionals always advise having over-the-counter medications handy in your home. These should include acetaminophen, ibuprofen (if you can take it), cough syrup, a thermometer, and any other cold/flu medications you may need. It is also important to talk with your health care provider or caregiver if you have any concerns regarding over-the-counter medications that may interfere with your prescriptions.

Flu season isn’t something to be taken lightly. The Influenza virus can be serious for senior adults, especially if you have pre-existing conditions and for those living in assisted living homes or nursing homes. For our home care clients who no longer drive, a FootPrints caregiver can drive you to the pharmacy or doctor’s office for a flu shot or appointment. The team at FootPrints New Mexico also provides at-home care for those in need of help at home. We aim to ensure you stay healthy not only this upcoming flu season but always.
