Honoring Veterans Day is a profound way to express gratitude for the immense sacrifices and courage our veterans have displayed in safeguarding our freedom. Veterans Day, originally known as Armistice Day, was first commemorated on November 11, 1919, marking the one-year anniversary of the end of World War I. This day became a national holiday in 1938 and was later renamed Veterans Day in 1954 to honor all veterans who have served in the U.S. military, expanding beyond WWI to recognize veterans from every era of service. Veterans Day is a moment to pause and reflect on the sacrifices these individuals have made to protect our way of life.
Every year on this special day I feel privileged to honor two of my own family heroes—my grandfathers—who served bravely in World War II. One was a tail gunner in the European theater, where he flew countless missions, courageously confronting Nazi forces in the skies. The other served as a naval officer in the Pacific theater, facing the daunting opposition of the Japanese imperial forces. Their bravery, resilience, and selflessness in the face of adversity are a testament to the strength and dedication of all service members. Both men returned home and continued to contribute positively to their families, communities, and the nation, embodying the spirit of commitment to others even after their military service concluded.
Two of my uncles bravely served in the Vietnam War, representing our family and country during one of the most challenging periods in American history. Amid the intense social and political divisions of the 1960s and ’70s, they answered the call to serve with dedication and courage, embodying the commitment to freedom that forms the backbone of our nation.
Their service in such a tumultuous time speaks to their strength of character and loyalty to foundational American values. Their dedication continued well beyond their time in the military; they returned home to build lives that reflect the resilience and determination of their generation. They have since instilled these values in their families, shaping the lives of their children and grandchildren with a legacy of integrity and strength. Their influence is a lasting reminder of the profound impact that service, sacrifice, and dedication can have on families and communities for generations to come.
