As Valentine’s Day approaches, I find myself reflecting on the love story that has shaped my own understanding of commitment, sacrifice, and devotion — the love story of my parents. Married since 1959, they have spent over six decades building a life together, a journey that began with a single, unexpected moment and has endured through all of life’s trials, joys, and simple, everyday moments.

The Beginning of a Lifetime Together

Their story didn’t begin with fireworks or grand gestures, but rather a simple blind double-date that took an unexpected turn. My father, an immigrant from a small town in northern Saskatchewan, had moved to Los Angeles as a teenager with his family, seeking medical treatment for his ailing father. He worked hard to support his family while finishing school, carrying a quiet strength that would come to define him.

My mother, a reserved and soft-spoken young woman from Oklahoma City, had also moved to Los Angeles with her hardworking single mother. When she and my father crossed paths that evening, fate took an interesting turn. As they arrived to pick up his friend’s date, my father took one look at my mother and immediately turned to his friend, saying matter-of-factly, “This one is my date.”

With that simple, decisive moment, a lifetime of love began.

A Love That Grew With Time

Through the years, my parents built a family together, raising six children, welcoming grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and even great-great-grandchildren. Now in their mid-eighties, they still cherish the daily rituals that have kept their love strong — sharing a late brunch together, chatting about the nuances of the day, and walking hand-in-hand. My father still opens the car door for my mother and gently helps her in, just as he always has. Their love is found in the small moments, the quiet exchanges, and the unwavering dedication they have to one another.

Their marriage is a testament to faith, loyalty, and perseverance. They have weathered life’s storms and celebrated its triumphs, always standing side by side. To this day, they continue to put energy and effort into their love, proving that true commitment doesn’t just endure — it thrives.
