Private Caregivers: Good idea or risk?

Private Caregivers: Good idea or risk?

“Wouldn’t it be less expensive to hire a private caregiver?”

This, a valid question, is one that we are often asked during the initial inquiry phase. Having to pay for the care of a loved one is, at first, a foreign concept and many decision makers unconsciously default to seeking the lowest cost option. But for a service as personal as assisted living, additional factors should be considered.

Long Term Care Insurance for Home Care

Long Term Care Insurance for Home Care

The passage of time is accompanied by many positives: increased knowledge, greater wisdom, and a more complete perspective on life. Unfortunately, it also has its negatives. Of the most prevalent are declining physical abilities that make daily life a more burdensome task. Though not a joyful experience, recognizing the inevitable effects of age can inspire the right preparation—preparation for future needs that may include long term care.

The American Lung Association's Fight For Air Climb

Have you ever forgotten to breathe? Two main reasons why people subconsciously hold their breath are stress and fear. Pulmonary specialists believe that our breathing is an indicator for the status of our body, mind, and emotions. But what if you remember to breathe, but simply can’t? For those struggling with lung cancer, asthma, emphysema, and other lung related illnesses, it’s not a matter of being willing but being able.

Fall Prevention for Seniors

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that every year millions of accidental falls occur among adults 65 years of age and older. While many result in only minor discomfort, the others, depending on where they occur can result in serious injury, sometimes even death. These statistics are likely unsurprising: it’s easy to see the link between a weakened physical state common among seniors and an increased fall risk. The challenge lies in determining the steps that need to be taken to ensure your loved one is protected against falls.

Most of us are not familiar with the term, “medically fragile” which is defined as a “chronic physical condition which results in prolonged dependency on medical care for which daily skilled nursing intervention is medically necessary.” Sounds daunting, but for some families, it’s an everyday way of life.

$470 Billion in Unpaid Care

A recent study conducted by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) produced a rather staggering statistic: the economic value of unpaid family caregiving activities in 2013 was an estimated $470 billion. Though undeniably a large figure, The Gazette further clarifies its significance claiming the valuation is “more than the combined sales” in the same year “from the four largest U.S. technology companies—Apple, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, and Microsoft.” This figure is striking, and points to a number of upcoming issues as a steady stream of baby boomers exit the work force and edge closer to developing physical limitations that require this time consuming care.

"Fall Back" on November 1st

"Fall Back" on November 1st

Daylight Saving Time (DST) ends on November 1st at 2:00 am which will actually be 1:00 am as we “fall back”. The mornings will get lighter, the evenings will get darker, and the days will get shorter. The best thing? We get an extra hour of sleep. The worst thing? We lose an hour of daylight each day making for short winter nights. When we “spring forward” it’s the opposite, we lose an hour of sleep in the transition, but we gain an extra hour of daylight each day, making for long summer days.

Serving the Underserved

A message from FootPrints Home Care President & CEO Brian Fletcher

I used to think leadership was about competence, hard work, and vision. I've since learned that leadership is about humility. Competence, hard work, and vision are important traits, but humility matters most because through it I have learned many lessons about the significance of the work we do. I have learned that I am not the boss, I am the steward. The steward of this business and the jobs it creates, the steward of the community impact we have, and most importantly, the steward of our culture.
