On February 22, 2015, Julianne Moore was awarded “Best Actress” by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for her portrayal of Alice Howland, a linguistics professor at Columbia University diagnosed with familial Alzheimer’s disease in the film Still Alice. Her performance was widely praised, as was the film which highlights the array of challenges associated with this tragic ailment. Pete Travers of Rolling Stone called it "an emotional powerhouse” that “will get to you” while Ty Burr of The Boston Globe says it is filmed “often to the point of tears”. This is partly the result of high quality acting and supreme direction, but perhaps more so due to the personal experience many of us have had with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. It’s a condition that affects those who bear it and those in support almost equally.
